How to Select an Electromagnetic Flowmeter: HNLD Guide

Check conductivity, flow velocity, wetted materials and straight-pipe length before selecting an HNLD flowmeter.

An electromagnetic flowmeter measures the volumetric flow of a conductive liquid using Faraday’s law. Pipe size alone is not enough to select a meter: medium, conductivity, flow range, temperature, pressure and installation must also be confirmed.

1. Confirm the medium and conductivity

The HNLD catalogue specifies a minimum fluid conductivity of 5 μS/cm. It describes use with conductive liquids and homogeneous liquid–solid suspensions. Do not select this model for nonconductive media or conductivity below that threshold without further technical confirmation.

2. Size from minimum, normal and maximum flow

The documented velocity range is 0.5–10 m/s; the recommended range for an inline meter is 1–5 m/s. Provide minimum, normal and maximum flow rather than selecting from nominal pipe size alone.

3. Match liner and electrodes to the liquid

The catalogue relates liner and electrode selection to corrosion, abrasion and temperature. State the liquid, concentration and normal/maximum temperatures. For complex mixed acids, the source recommends a coupon test to help assess electrode compatibility.

4. Check installation and outputs

For inline installation, the source lists at least 5D upstream and 2D downstream straight pipe, where D is the internal pipe diameter. Confirm available space, power, output and whether an integral, remote or insertion arrangement is needed. The catalogue lists 4–20 mA and RS232, RS485 and HART interface options; verify the final combination for the selected configuration.

Information to send for a quotation

  • Medium, conductivity, concentration and temperature;
  • Pipe size, minimum/normal/maximum flow and operating pressure;
  • Installation, available straight pipe, power and output requirements.

See the HNLD product page or send your process conditions for selection support. Confirm final specifications and materials in the approved technical document before ordering.
