Water treatment instrumentation: flow, level, pH and dissolved oxygen applications
A pumping station, aeration basin and neutralization tank need different measurements. Start with the duty, installation conditions and intended use of the signal.
This article draws on four published case studies and application notes. They are references from their original publishers, not Honzen or Anhui Huining project credentials. Features of the equipment in these examples must not be assumed for another model.
Match the measurement to the process
- Inlet pumping station: level monitoring and pump operation; check changing water levels, obstructions, foam and possible flooding.
- Water pipelines: instantaneous flow and total volume; check conductivity, full-pipe conditions, diameter, grounding and available pipework.
- Aeration basin: dissolved oxygen monitoring; consider representative positioning, fouling, cleaning and the control interface.
- Neutralization tank: pH feedback; check composition, temperature, mixing time, electrode location and access for maintenance.
Lessons from published applications
01 | Process-water metering in Pendleton
Endress+Hauser describes a wastewater facility with limited straight pipework that had relied on estimated process-water use. A purpose-designed electromagnetic meter provided repeatable flow and total readings. Original case ↗
Do not transfer its special installation capability to a standard meter. Check the selected model’s full-pipe, grounding and straight-run requirements against the actual pipe layout.
02 | Level measurement at a sewage pumping station
KROHNE reports a Queensland, Australia application where a contact level probe had response and blockage-related maintenance limitations. The operator evaluated non-contact radar. Original case ↗
Check the mounting position, internal structures, foam, condensation, corrosion and submersion risk. Confirm high-level alarms and pump logic separately.
03 | Dissolved oxygen in continuous aeration
Yokogawa’s application note uses online dissolved oxygen measurement in an aeration basin and addresses sensor mounting and contamination. Application note ↗
Specify a compatible controller and sensor, with access for cleaning and verification. Establish operating targets through process design and commissioning rather than applying one universal setpoint.
04 | pH feedback in batch neutralization
Yokogawa’s batch-neutralization note explains pH-based chemical dosing and the risk of overshoot when insufficient time is allowed for mixing and reaction. Application note ↗
Check electrode compatibility and its distance from the dosing point. Review mixing and measurement delays before changing the control settings.
Information for selection and quotation
Please provide the process stage, medium composition, solids, temperature and pressure; pipe diameter and flow range for a flow point; tank depth, internal layout and alarms for a level point; and installation, cleaning and maintenance arrangements for an analytical point. Include supply voltage, signal interface, protection requirements and photographs.

Frequently asked questions
Can an electromagnetic flowmeter measure every wastewater stream?
No. Confirm sufficient conductivity, full-pipe conditions, lining and electrode compatibility, solids and installation details. A standard full-pipe meter is not a direct choice for an open channel.
Do pH and oxygen readings alone establish effluent quality?
No. They serve different operating duties. Evaluation also depends on the project’s other monitoring requirements and measurement quality controls.
Can a replacement instrument use the old location?
Recheck dimensions, measuring principle, wetted materials, wiring and maintenance access. Physical fit alone does not establish suitability.
